Movies make your hormones jump

23 July 2004
by Richard Conan-Davies

For some of us it may seem obvious but the movies really do change how you feel. In this case it seems they do sometimes change your hormone levels quite dramatically.

This is all according to research led by psychology Professor Oliver Schultheiss of the University of Michigan.

Schultheiss measured the hormone levels of men and women watching different types of movies. For example the Godfather II increased testosterone by upto 30% and Bridges of Madison County increased progesterone by 10% As a comparison nature documentaries did not do much to hormone levels.

This research may help people improve their personal relationships by considering what type of movies to watch to help their improve their relationships.

Oliver Schultheiss' work is due to be presented in the science journal Hormones and Behaviour
